Hip Dysplasia in Dogs: What It Is and How Nutrition Can Help

Hip dysplasia is one of the most common words pet parents hear at the vet — and one of the most misunderstood. It's often talked about like a single, fixed diagnosis: your dog either has it or doesn't. In reality, it's a developmental condition with a genetic root and a set of environmental factors that shape how severely it shows up. Nutrition is one of those factors — not a cure, but a real lever pet parents actually have some control over.

What Hip Dysplasia Actually Is

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. In a healthy hip, the ball (the top of the femur) sits snugly in the socket (the acetabulum), gliding smoothly with every step. Hip dysplasia is a developmental abnormality in that joint — the socket and ball don't form to fit each other correctly, leaving the joint loose, or "lax." Over time, that looseness causes abnormal wear. The body responds by laying down extra bone and thickening the joint capsule, which is the beginning of degenerative joint disease — what most people know as osteoarthritis.

It's not a single-cause condition. Genetics set the baseline risk, but growth rate, exercise, body weight, and nutrition during a dog's development all influence how — and how severely — that genetic predisposition actually plays out.

Which Dogs Are Most at Risk

Hip dysplasia shows up most often in large and giant breeds — Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Saint Bernards, and Great Danes are frequently cited as higher-risk breeds. That's largely a function of size and growth rate: bigger dogs put more mechanical load on a joint that's still developing. But it isn't exclusive to large breeds. Hip dysplasia can and does occur in small dogs, and even in cats, just less frequently.

Because it's heritable, responsible breeders screen breeding dogs with hip radiographs before pairing them. But screening reduces risk — it doesn't eliminate it, which is exactly why the environmental side of the equation (nutrition, weight, growth rate) matters so much for the dog you already have.

The Nutrition Connection

Nutrition doesn't cause or cure hip dysplasia. What it does is influence growth rate and body condition during the window when the joint is still forming — and that window matters more than most pet parents realize.

Quick fact: A long-running Labrador Retriever study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association followed littermates fed either free-choice or a measured, controlled amount of food over their lifetimes. The dogs kept on a leaner, controlled feeding plan showed a meaningfully lower rate and later onset of hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis than their free-fed littermates — despite starting from identical genetics.

Separately, research in German Shepherds found that overweight puppies were roughly twice as likely to develop hip dysplasia compared to puppies kept at a lean, healthy weight. The mechanism makes intuitive sense: rapid growth and excess weight increase mechanical stress on a joint that hasn't finished developing, which can worsen the expression of an underlying genetic predisposition.

Signs to Watch For

Hip dysplasia can show up early, sometimes in puppies as young as four months old, or later in life as osteoarthritis develops. Signs worth paying attention to include:

  • Difficulty or hesitation rising, jumping, or climbing stairs
  • A "bunny-hopping" gait when running, using both hind legs together
  • Stiffness that's worse after rest and eases with gentle movement
  • Reduced activity, muscle loss in the hindquarters, or a swaying gait

If you notice any of the above, the right next step is always a veterinary exam — hip dysplasia is diagnosed through physical exam and radiographs, not guesswork at home.
